Basic Life Skills

First of all, if you missed the Give Oh Give Away, there is still 3 days to enter the drawing for free spices. You really don't want to miss out.

Now to the random thought of the week. Am I crazy, or is that my Little Man cooking dinner? Just had to do a post and say how amazing I think it is to see him cooking at such a young age. Ace asked me to make some bell peppers and onions...and I got a little distracted. When I came back to the kitchen, little man was at the stove. He cut the vegetables, added a touch of oil, and commenced to cooking the dinner. After I picked my jaw up off the ground I realized a few things...
His hands where well placed, as to not get burned. That's something a lot of adults don't do. He also had the stove on the perfect setting and the pan on the right sized burner. Even more important for me, was that he had the right kitchen tool that wouldn't scratch my non-stick cookware. YES! Major attention to detail is important. His wife will thank me later.
His vegetables where relatively uniform in size and shape. This, of course, allows for uniform cooking. I was absolutely giddy! Tell me those veggies aren't the most rock-a-luscious veggies you've ever seen from a 10 year old. Rock-a-luscious is a word. De-luscious is a word. Gi-normeous isn't a word. Just to be clear.

After I stopped beaming, hugging, and dishing out praise, I ate a big bowl of perfectly cooked happiness. Because he cooked them, he was more than willing to eat those vegetables. Isn't it refreshing to be able to eat the fruits of educational labors? I am so rip-snorting thrilled to see my son learning and applying basic life skills. Hooray Little Man! Keep it up!

There you go.

My 12 year old loves to cook. I have a goal to start teaching him more than just basics like mac and cheese and pancakes.

Something I'm totally passionate about is teaching them to be totally self reliant in the kitchen. Culinary skills are getting to be one of the lost arts and it's so sad! There's so many creative experiences in the kitchen.

I totally agree about cooking becoming a lost art...how wonderful to have instilled that in your son, I am trying to do it with my kids even though they're young.Things like this make me so excited for what I have to look forward to when my girls get older...thanks for being an inspiration!
