Love Isn't Love Until You Give it Away

This morning, Face pulled a chair over to the stove and commenced to pour pancake batter onto the hot griddle while I turned the hotcakes over. It had been ages since we did something side by side at the stove. Half way through the cooking, he turned to me. Without a word he threw his little arms around my neck and kissed my cheek. I heard the words,"I love you mom." I wonder if I will ever get tired of hearing that? No. I will cherish those words more than any riches on earth. They are what keep me going.
I thought of this today as I saw a picture of my brother (the Professor) sharing a book with his daughter. I'm taking a time away to share time with my family. I'm stepping away from the busy things, to make some memories with the ones I love most. To children as well as adults, it is taking that time, that will change the world. How do you show love? Are you sure those you love really know deep down that you love them?

A few lines from my favorite musical The Sound of Music:

"A bell is no bell till you ring it, A song is no song till you sing it, And love in your heart wasn’t put there to stay— Love isn’t love till you give it away."

Have a wonderful Sunday. Love the ones around you with all your heart. Take the time to make sure they know you love them. That's all I have to say about that.

I can be a bit awkward when it comes to knowing the best way to deal with certain situations i.e... what to say if a friend is heartbroken, what to do when someone I care about loses a loved one or how much help to offer someone in need without insulting them. One thing I always DO feel comfortable with is bringing them food...it's like a universal language. It's especially helpful if you remember something they said was their "favorite" and make it for them. You don't have to say much and I often find, even in times of trouble or despair, sitting at a table over some good food always manages to bring on laughter at some point. Making food for others brings me as much comfort as I hope it brings the recipient :-)

And on a different note...where can I get the recipe for those pancakes?! They look delicious!

My little boy decided he was a chef after he saw Ratatouille. He loves to push a bar stool over when I cook. But, I worry that his legs will get longer and he will not want to help as much as time goes. I will always cherish the days spent next to him on a bar stool. It's amazing what the love of a child does for a mother's heart. <3

Jennie, I think you are a kindred spirit. Food is so universal. Pancake recipe is my all purpose baking mix...Mom to Many, can I just say that I almost can't breath when I think of the day that my boys won't be excited to pull up a chair and cook with me...so much so that I bask in it when they do. Big hugs and love. These are the golden years aren't they?
